Allerdice steps off bench to bag winner for Styrud’s ladies

Twas a chilly Sunday morn when Dunbar AAW2s lined up for their fourth game in 8 days. You heard correctly, 4 games in 8 days. Our weary legs and our “too old for this” bodies felt just about ready to give up the ghost. We persevered and unveiled that we can, in fact, actually win a game!

Despite the cold and decrepit bones, Dunbar started strongly. Jones andRoche stretched the Maroubra defence in the early stages with a series of neat touches and probing runs. The midfield struggled to keep up but eventually made it forward despite being attacked by some sideline pine-cones. Katie Duke was on point, as always and lofted a perfect corner into the centre for Kemble to convert.

While Dunbar remained dominant, there were increasing moments of concern at the other end of the pitch. Under-strength due to injuries toHowes and Westerberg, our backline showed tremendous tenacity and strength to fend off an end-of-half surge by Maroubra. The girls in green sent a few cracking shots just wide or just over the posts. Volunteer goalkeeper Kate Bremner, in turn did a cracking job at keeping them out.

Heading into the second half with a tenuous One-Nil lead, the Dunbar girls were definitely not yet assured of a win. For once this season, luck seemed to be on our side, or it could be that magnificent Molly was back and could actually see the ball and her fellow teammates. Whatever it was, we scored some goals! All three with an assist being attributed to Magnificent Molly “Tinderella” Roche who tore the Maroubra defence to pieces with her silky skills. And how about the amazing Kat Jacob, who scored a cracker of a goal after relentless shooting practice from her side testing her aim and Maroubra’s goalkeeper. A screamer from outside the box bent into the top corner. Super sub Stephanie “All-over-it” Allerdice stepped off the bench and had the final say with a blitzing goal bringing the score to 4-1.

A special mention to Raquel “Jack-of-all-trades” Hunter who put in some hard yards across the park switching in from defence to centre-forward to wingback to centre-mid and every other position! A great effort across the pitch and always with a smile.

The AAW2s are looking forward to a quiet week of recovery and hopefully having an actual training session! Weeks of rain and Wednesday night games has seen The Reg a no-go-zone. Onwards and upwards for the second half of the season.

AAW2s v Sydney Uni
2-5

#katchat

Wednesday night is not a great night for football.

Sadly our trip to the regal greens of the University of Sydney did not end in jewels nor treasure. Despite our best efforts and there was a lot of effort, we came off second best in a two horse race. It was survival of the fittest out there and we were certainly not the fittest. In other words, we lost. Quite badly in fact.

The match can be described in two phases, we defended and then we attacked. Then we defended… and then we attacked. Then we defended again and then we attacked. In a seemingly never ending cycle the girls from Sydney Uni were relentless. Both in scoring goals and making it their personal quest to force me to run more than I have ever run before.

Unfortunately Uni’s attacking quests were more fruitful than ours and they quickly took a convincing lead. Their barely 18-year-old legs were much, faster, stronger and ambitious than ours and we were powerless to stop them.

A monumental effort from Ciara & Raquel who volunteered in goals, also accolades to Emma & Rosie who put one each between the posts to help redeem the scoreline. Applause to all who played, it was a hard fought battle. I sincerely hope the uni kids enjoyed a nice sleep in and breakfast by mum as we all limped off to work the next day.
