Over 35A Match Report | 19th April

Gritty Performance sees off Coogee

On a cold and windy afternoon at Heffron the Over 35A squad faced a tricky encounter against a Coogee side who in the past have been difficult to beat.

With the wind at our backs we attacked across the park but found the final balls played were difficult to control. With a new strike force of Peter and Graeme leading the line, we made inroads and got into some good positions, but our link ups and shots on goal failed to get us an opening goal.

At the 43 minute mark our luck finally changed, when a pinpoint through ball by Pete, found Nathan who made a great run from midfield and managed to out pace the defence and buried a strike past the oncoming keeper into the corner of the net to take us to the break 1-0 up

Into a howling wind we knew it was going to be tough, but we focussed on keeping the ball on the deck and started to play some attractive free flowing football. Coogee though were resilient and remained competitive throughout and we needed to get a much needed 2nd goal to kill off the game. The chance came after 88 minutes’ when Marko found himself in the clear on half way and proceeded to sprint ‘gazelle like’ down the right wing for close to 40 metres. He then looked up to play a neat cross that found Gaffers, who calmly made space in the box to cut back and beat a defender and then expertly drilled it into the bottom right corner to make it 2-0.

Coogee’s heads dropped and just 1 minute later defensive strongman Johnny Harris, obviously inspired by Marko just moments before, charged forward and attempted a lob over the advancing keeper who managed to get a hand to the strike only to palm it away to find Marko who was on hand to tap in from close range to make it 3-0 and job done.

A great squad effort again from everyone in tough conditions against a spirited opposition.
