Dunbar Ladies Championship 9 – 0 Queens Park #SchillersSpiel
At my first attempt at this match report I couldn’t remember the goal scorers from Sunday’s clash at Reg Bartley – and it had nothing to do with my red-wine induced hangover.nine goals would be tricky for anyone to remember, alcohol-headache or not…
But 9-0 was the final scoreline, and it could have been more had we embraced Coach Gordo’s pleas for clinical finishing and patient possession play. But when goals start flowing it’s hard to contain the push forward. I play in a back three and haven’t scored a real goal in years, but even I had dreams of scoresheet glory. These dreams were quickly crushed, however, when my contact lens popped out and I could barely see my own boots let alone the opposition’s 18-yard line…
But my teammates were less overawed by the challenge, with Mindy scoring four goals, Bina and Fran each bagging a brace, and Sophie – who blitzed defenders all game – grabbing a deserved goal too.
Given my poor memory and blurred vision, it’s best I avoid a play-by-play report and instead point to a few highlights:
* Called-up keeper Jo’s efforts between the sticks were fantastic, and her passing to the back three helped us keep our flow
*New Irish import Ciara admirably came down to support, despite being attacked by a lamppost on Friday night (there are unconfirmed reports she actually walked into it). She bravely took on dog-minding duties for the game, no small task given the cacophony of yapping the Dunbar dogs were producing. (In other news, my dog will no longer be attending Dunbar games…)
*Mindy got four goals. That needs to be mentioned again. FOUR GOALS.
*Charlotte and Malin’s touches were golden on Sunday, and this was despite the fact Malin was wearing a five-year-old’s playing shorts and someone else’s boots.
It’s back to State Cup football this week and Eschol Park will be our foes – as long as there are no dogs, no lamp post attacks, and Malin can find her own boots, Dunbar will be pushing for victory at Heffron Park (at 10.30am, if you’re interested…).
