GODS Match Report | 26th April

Having celebrated St George’s Day and Anzac Day, the ancient feet of the GOD’s walked upon the quite green and pleasantish lands of Turrawell. The clouds had unfolded and we were to take on the Redfern Rebels. The Rebels were new to the O45s being the younger brothers/ sons of the Redfern Raiders. Their younger looks suggested they might be green and not sure how pleasant. We had 14 eager players lead by stand-in mum, the dark satanic David Mills. To be fair, Millsy is not either dark or satanic, but I couldn’t resist the line. It was great to have Mark Pollasky returning from a broken thumb so his sword would no longer sleep in his hand.

So, to the game. Early pressure from Dunbar did not see the Countenance Divine and Redfern were to take an early lead with a breakaway goal skillfully executed by their striker.

Dunbar did not cease from mental fight as we quickly reversed the lead. Firstly Adrian brought his spear with a free kick that was only half saved for Sniffer CJ to pounce and equalize. Minutes later Chris B on a break up the right shot his arrow of desire straight into the back of the net. 2-1 Dunbar, great stuff, our tails were wagging.

Redfern then equalized just before half time with a swerving shot through a crowded penalty box. 2-2, game on.

The second half started fast and furious. Andy Pilks revved up his chariot of fire down the left wing to open up their defence. This allowed CJ an elegant finish to give us the upper hand at 3-2.

Back and forth the game went till Redfern’s striker created space and beat Quintin in a one on one. 3-3, tense stuff. Back and forth, back and forth till Adrian this time used his bow of burning gold to reclaim our lead. 4-3 Dunbar with 10 to go.

Back and forth, back and forth again till a Redfern free kick just outside our box. The ref thought it fun to see our keeper taken out by an aggressive challenge. The lonely ball then bobbled over the line smile emoticon . Mustn’t grumble. Despite it denying us a win, it was a well contested 4-4 draw.

In summary, it’s great to have another competitive team in our 045’s comp. It would be good to see Dunbar emulate Redfern in getting their older players in the right teams.

Special mention to Chris, Bally and Millsy, but MoM deservedly went to CJ. CJ is now becoming the team sniffer with his bright white goal mouth finishes brought to you by his employer, Colgate. Three such goals to CJ in two games, giving us that fresh breadth of confidence.

After four games our sweet chariot hurtles forward unbeaten with two wins and two draws. The spirit of the team is now shining forth as we build Dunbar’s evergreen and present brand.

Special acknowledgement to William Blake for helping us try to build Jerusalem.
