AAW3 vs Heffron Hawks Yellow 4-3

The Dunbar Rovers #AAW3 woke this morning to a very warm April morning We faced the inaptly named “Heffron Hawks Yellow” team on their home ground, in their very black kit. Today we were blessed with not only a referee but also two very competent assistant referees Amy and Sam from Coogee United FC. We started off strong, With Amy up front making some dangerous runs and Kate B working the right wing hard. Susie, Steph and Katie Duke worked the midfield hard, putting lots of pressure on the Hawks. Within the first ten minutes, Kate B capitalized off a rebound from the Heffron keeper and scored.

Heffron came back quickly with a powerful shot from long that Kimi bravely took on the head but unfortunately found its way into the net. Conceding spooked us a little, as we had been dominating strongly up until that point, and the rest of the half was a lot of scrappy football, with lots of great work done by the defensive line: Captain Maiken – an excellent centre back was communicating well with Kimi, Ciara and Mel, and Clare at the back in goalkeeper, Despite some strong work from all on the pitch the score at half time was 1-1.
Coach Scott Sadler gave us a great half time talk and we went on the pitch ready to play beautiful football. Amanda played well up front and Amber was working it hard on the right wing and doing some excellent throw ins. Mel tried several times to get on the score sheet again from right back, however, the goalkeeper managed to make some great saves and tapped the balls away. Finally, Pilli managed to get a ball in the back of the net. Hooray, it was 2-1!
Heffron quickly equalized with another great shot, and despite great efforts from Clare they then scored again! 3-2 to Heffron and the game wasn’t going how we thought it would! Secret weapons Donna and Lawrissa put the fire back into the midfield, and shortly after Susie equalized with a cracking shot, after linking up well with Pili on the wing… magical! Now at 3-3 and with 10 minutes to go Scott was chewing his fingernails down the quick. Everyone on the pitch was digging deep despite suffering from fatigue after our 4-0 cup game win on Thursday night against Maroubra U18 who showed us the speed of youth. Our efforts paid off as Amy found the back of the net just at the end of the game to give us sweet, sweet victory. Then it was down to the Royal Oak Double Bay for some victory hydration.
A great game of football and a beautiful game, thanks Heffron Hawks!
