O35’s make hard work of Mascot in Reg opener
Back at The Reg for the first time in a while, Dunbar O35s took all three points in a tight encounter with Mascot, with a 2-1 victory.
Dunbar dominated the majority of the first half keeping possession across the park with controlled short passes and using the full width of the expansive Reg.
With a swift break through the middle the opening goal arrived on the half hour when Giggsy slotted in Whitey, who took a touch and curled across goal into the top corner with the outside of his right foot.
Dunbar had several further chances to extend their lead with Gauty, Marko and Tony all going close.
But Mascot were strong on the counter and had plenty of pace up top and through the middle of midfield. Although they didn’t have a lot of possession, they did threaten on a couple of occasions running at our back four. But the back four of Ollie, Vahan, Todd and Gilesy all stood up well, leaving Taggy to deal with a few long range efforts.
1-0 it remained at half time.
The second half was, however, a different story with Mascot getting more ball and probing from both sides. After drawing a free kick cutting inside and centre of goal the Mascot striker took aim and struck the ball hard into the top corner giving Taggy no chance. Mascot went on from that and continued to press creating a couple of good chances from which they should have converted.
But as the game entered the final quarter Dunbar rallied again, using the subs wisely to bring some fresh legs on. From a number of attacks, Gaffers went very close to regaining the lead when. Through one on one, he danced around the keeper and just as he pulled the trigger, somehow the stopper just got enough on it to deflect it out for a corner. However, from that corner, Mascot failed to clear and the ball fell invitingly for Tony to volley home smartly from the penalty spot into the top corner.
A harsh Mascot red card inside the last five minutes killed off any hopes of an equaliser, and Dunbar holding on comfortably to see out the game and ensure The Reg remains a fortress.
