Global warming has made The Reg a lovely place to go on an April afternoon. This Sunday it was practically balmy, and a bike ride through Rushcutters Bay Park to the AAW1As fixture against Maccabi took me past a number of bikini clad backpackers making the most of the last rays of the season.
After cycling over two picnic blankets and veering to avoid a cavoodle, I got to the Reg where Maccabi were waiting. This young Maccabi side had made their way up to the first division through a string of solid Div2 results and intelligent play in 2016, and they showed the same skill on Sunday, with several strong counterattacks and young pace up front. One of these young pacemakers giggled when she saw my older-than-her age on my players card – I wouldn’t’ recommend giggling at a defenders’ age. We defenders have a tendency to take things personally, and tend to respond with slide tackles.
Despite Maccabi’s fortified defence, we broke through in the first few minutes and held on to a 2-0 lead at halftime. We found our attacking legs in the second-half and netted another four goals to make it three wins from three fixtures this year. Next week’s match will be a litmus test for the season, with our opponents Sydney Uni – a new addition to the ESFA comp – likely to provide some stern competition.
